Creating a Colorful Instagram Feed + Mural Finding Tips

If you’ve seen Instagram in the last few years, you’ve probably noticed trends in what’s popular: bright white backgrounds, supersaturated oranges, and now, my favorite… a colorful Instagram feed! As a blogger, I truly love the process of creating a fun feed. Recently, I’ve been loving using colorful murals as backgrounds. I thought it would be fun (and hopefully helpful) to write a post all about how I find murals and plan out mural photoshoots.

GOOGLE MURALS IN YOUR CITY

This is the easiest (and most obvious) step you can take… but don’t let it be your last! When you Google murals in specific cities, you’ll probably find helpful roundups and blogs. Bigger cities will have a ton of websites and posts all about murals you can check out! A bonus of these websites: most of them will also include locations. This Nashville post included a ton of murals that my friend & I decided to find! This website includes Google/Apple maps of walking tours of Atlanta murals… SO helpful.

SCROLL THE LOCATION ON INSTAGRAM

Let’s be real: most cities aren’t full of murals. Opelika and Auburn have just a few fun walls, but I always know about them when they come up because I look through the location on Instagram! When I visited Columbus in Georgia, I found a few murals I loved because I looked through the Instagram location.

FOLLOW INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS DEDICATED TO MURALS

I’m lucky to live (in the summer and on breaks) in a city as fun as Birmingham that’s full of bright colors! But… if you look up Birmingham murals, you’ll probably only scratch the surface of the fun murals the city has to offer. I follow an Instagram account completely dedicated to sharing new Birmingham murals (@magiccitymurals) and always save fun photos to my Instagram. If your city has an account like this, follow it. And… if they don’t, make it!

BE WILLING TO PULL OVER AND SWITCH IT UP

Greer and I had fully finished taking photos in Atlanta and were driving to get food when we saw this mural… and I definitely pulled over so we could take photos! Some of my favorite photos are unexpected backgrounds and could only happen with friends who are willing to go out of the way for the photo.

SAVE GOOGLE MAPS PINS

This will make your mural finding life SO MUCH EASIER. As you find new locations, save them to your phone! That way, if you’re tackling a ton of mural photos in one day, you can make the most of your time and visit murals that are near each other. When you’re researching different murals, you’ll also probably find some areas that are super dense in wall art – stick to those if you’re in a time crunch! The Nashville Off the Wall Project is amazing and included 12 unique murals… perfect for anyone’s colorful Instagram feed!

Hopefully this post is helpful if you want to go mural hunting in your city or if you’re a blogger trying to create a rainbow-inspired feed! I am ALL about finding joy in little things – and sometimes, that means being happy just because we see bright, colorful feeds.
