How to Style Bright Colors for Fall

The temperatures are (finally) (somewhat) changing, Halloween cookies are in stock, and every day, we’re getting closer and closer to fall. But that doesn’t mean you have to put away your summer brights! Maybe it’s because Alabama doesn’t get a true fall or maybe it’s my obsession with adding color to my every day, but I love styling bright colors for fall. If you’re looking for more ways to wear to your favorite summer pieces, try out these three ideas.

Choose a Colorful Sweater Tank

On Sunday when I walked outside, I felt a breeze in the air and immediately began planning my (social distance) fall. Gilmore Girls and The Vampire Diaries marathons. Pinning photos of pumpkin patches and fall decor while I stay at home. Reading and re-reading my favorite novels with a candle burning. By 10 AM, my fall plans were pretty much gone and the temperature was back to the 80s.

Instead of jumping into autumn, I like to ease into it by wearing fall textures in summer fits. I love choosing a sweater tank with bright colors to bring some color into the dreary weather, but in Alabama, it’s way too warm to be wearing sweaters for at least a month. A sweater tank is an easy option to layer under a jacket in the morning and then to wear on its own once the sun is beating down on you.

Add Suede to Your Outfit

My go-to texture to add to my wardrobe when it’s too warm for corduroy or sweaters? SUEDE. It’s no secret 70s style is having a big moment, and adding suede to your summer-fall wardrobe is the perfect way to incorporate the trending style in a casual way. Mustard yellow and turquoise are one of my favorite bright color combinations, and I think these bright colors for fall work perfectly.

This outfit is one of my favorite things ever and I can’t stop myself from dancing to “Right Back Where We Started From” when I’m wearing it. Here’s hoping that sooner rather than later, I can wear this all Saturday, from heading to a farmers market to spontaneously checking out a concert.

Pair Bright Colors with Neutral Patterned Pants

If you’ve seen me lately (in person or on Instagram), I’ve probably been wearing these pants. I picked them up along with this tee (only $15!!) and love them paired together. Linen patterned pants are just the perfect option for this weird in-between weather because they’re cool enough to wear in the heat but you can also layer a chunky sweater with them.

Throughout the stress of this year, one thing that has been constantly uplifting my mood has been the weather. When Auburn closed campus in the spring and I was refreshing my phone for COVID updates every ten minutes, something that truly made me happy was taking long walks and calling a friend or listening to a podcast, and the beautiful spring weather made that possible. Now, as I walk to my office, even though I’m not sure what I want to be doing longterm and this wasn’t my plan, the crisp breeze in the air is exactly what I pictured when I imagined my first job in Birmingham. When I can’t control anything else in my life, I can control what I wear and what I intentionally appreciate. Almost nothing about postgrad life is what I expected, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t beauty in this season.
