Trend in Transition: Styling Gingham

When I think of gingham, the first thing in my mind is picnics… and maybe Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. To me, gingham is such a sweet pattern that I normally see reserved for spring and summer. Today, I’m going to share my tips for styling gingham for the fall!

Not gonna lie, I’m excited about this gingham shirt for so many reasons. One – it isn’t stripes! I love (more like LOVE) stripes… so much so that I force myself to step away from them. My last two posts even had striped clothes in them! Two – I picked up this shirt for a total of THREE dollars. That’s a steal… even for me. Because the summer season is ending (rip), finding gingham on sale should be easy.

My Tips for Styling Gingham for Fall

1. Pair with darker pants.

I’m a fan of dark jeans year-round, but I think they are especially fitting for fall. In the summer, I would choose shorts or white pants but when I’m wearing a more summery top, I choose to wear dark jeans to balance out the look.

2. Keep accessories simple.

This is probably one of my most-said tips when it comes to these transition posts, but that’s because I think it’s important! I love to experiment with accessories, but with outfits like this, I think it’s fun to let the pattern of the top shine on its own.

3. Choose seasonal shoes.

This is a “do as I say, not as I do” kinda tip… I love the sandals with this look, but as it gets further into fall (and less painfully humid outside), I’ll pair the look with ankle boots.

So, have you hopped aboard the gingham trend? It’s definitely one of those patterns that I was unsure of… but I’ll try just about any trend for $3.

  1. Seasonal shoes make all the difference with outfits sometimes, I swear! I love taking patterns that almost seem tied to a season and bringing them into different times of the year to switch it up a bit 🙂

    1. Same! It’s honestly embarrassing how long I try to get away with wearing sandals though…
