5 Reasons to Write a Card

This (probably) isn’t a surprise to anyone: I love writing cards. Like, I LOVE them… so much that I always carry around a few notecards just in case! This summer I have the goal of writing a card for a different friend every week. Sending a friend a random card is an easy but meaningful way to show them how much you care. I especially love the idea for those college friendships that might fade during the summer because you aren’t around each other. Take 10 minutes each week to think of a friend who may need uplifting, and send them a card! Today I’m going to share 5 reasons to write a card – choose one (or all!) and make someone’s day.

1. Encourage a friend starting a new job.

This is so relevant at this time in my life – from friends getting internships for the summer, to graduates starting their first big-time jobs! Starting a new job, no matter how big or small, can be extremely stressful, so sending a card is a simple way to encourage them. They may be nervous because they don’t know anyone, or they’re worried that they won’t know what’s expected BUT just knowing that they’re supported can help so much.

2. Thank someone out of the ordinary.

Sending thank you cards to someone for a gift is common courtesy, but why not thank someone you normally wouldn’t? A few people who deserve tons of gratitude, but don’t always get it, are: bus drivers, baristas, postal workers, etc. Next time you’re using someone’s service, give them a thank you card letting them know you’re grateful for their hard work!

3. Let someone know you’re praying for them.

People ask for prayers for plenty of reasons, from stress about work projects to serious problems in their families. I think a great way to support someone in a hard time is to write them a card with encouraging words and a reminder that they’re in your prayers. Of course, not everyone likes to make their prayers public, and if this is the case, I think a simple “thinking of you” card for the person you’re praying for would be a kind gesture!

4. Congratulate someone for their hard work.

My friends and family truly inspire me every day. From working hard at their jobs to accomplishing their goals in school, there are always plenty of people to look to for motivation! Instead of keeping those feelings to myself, I love to let a friend know that I see how hard they’re working. I personally feel so proud when someone acknowledges my hard work.

5. Write someone a “just because” card.

This is my go-to, and I tend to combine a few of the above reasons! You don’t need a real reason to send someone a card, so just let them know you’re thinking of them. As a kid, I loved when my mom got the mail and there was actually a card for me. Now, mail is usually magazines or junk, so by sending cards I’m hoping my friends can get the same excitement I used to get.

I hope these 5 reasons to write a card encourage you to send someone a random card!

xoxo, Cecilia

P.S. I always buy packs of patterned notecards in Target for less than $10, but I’m linking some other cute options below! My only problem with cards this cute is I never want to actually send them…
